Description

Travel back in time with a trip to Ambras Castle nestled into the foothills near Innsbruck. See the collections amassed by the Tyrolian Archduke Ferdinand II, perusing the distinctive Chamber of Arts and Curiosities, as well as the estate's sprawling armoury and its exhaustive Habsburg Portrait Gallery.

Enter Ambras Castle and transport yourself to a world of artistic intrigue. Once a mediaeval fortress, the imposing palace was transformed into a formidable Renaissance castle for the archduke's wife, Philippine Wesler. Launch your experience by touring the residential quarters, getting a feel for the stately appointments where Ferdinand and Philippine spent most of their time.

From here, visit the Chamber of Arts and Curiosities—the archduke's passion project. Appreciate an amalgam of the mundane and the peculiar, with Asian silks, samurai armour, mechanical toys, ornate woodcarvings, and coral on display. Then, head to the armoury where you can marvel at rare jousting apparel from the 15th century and weaponry from the Thirty Years' War.

Next, delight in a rousing jaunt through the Spanish Hall and the Habsburg Portrait Gallery. Here, glimpse more than 200 likenesses, putting a face to the name of rulers like Emperor Charles V and King Phillip II of Spain. Conclude your visit in the fresh air. Stroll a courtyard near the castle and revel in the cool breeze while appreciating frescoes from the 16th century.

We had a great time. They have an amazing collection of knight armor, among other interesting historical curiosities. The grounds are beautiful and the self guided castle tour is a great way to experience history up close and personal.
