Home away from home

This lakeview property is clearly used as a second home by its owners. Every inch of space has been thoughtfully used to add to the enjoyment and usefulness of the home -- from the bookshelves in the living room to the wine glass rack (with bottle opener, decanter) and knife rack (good knives are appreciated!) in the kitchen, to the garage full of summer and winter gear (cross country skis, snow shoes, sleds), to a closet full of flashlights and a workroom of equipment. There was plenty of space for 7 adults and 3 rambunctious kids (the foosball table is a great addition and the bunk bed loft was deemed "the best bedroom"), and the sledding run next to the house was well used. The lake is literally across a (not busy) street, and I could imagine strolling over for a morning kayak or just sipping coffee on the porch looking over the lake.
Two caveats for winter use:
1. The cabin's heating system relies on a wood pellet stove that takes about a day to warm up the main living space (the house was 50 degrees when we arrived), and two days to warm the top two floors. There are wall heaters in each bedroom (and a central thermostat for each floor that only has one vent) that help, but we never got the bottom floor warm.
2. Several of us spent 5+ hours (with a pick from the garage) and two bags of salt we bought trying to clear the ice in the driveway. We happened to be there after a cold spell with no snow, and the long driveway was covered with 4 inches of ice -- which was slippery enough that the cleaning woman with 4WD and studs in her tires slid 10 feet when she pulled in (as did one of our cars). This was one of only 3 or so houses in the neighborhood that had not been cleared (also one of the shadiest). The plowing that had been done left a foot or two of snow on either side of the driveway, which meant it was very difficult to fit 4 cars (no street parking in winter) -- we had to dig a space for the door to open on each side. If you only had one or two cars, it would not have been a problem.
So, 6/5 as a summer rental. 5/5 with caveats for winter -- think of it as a winter adventure (with bonus ice pick workout), and a great setup for a family getaway.
