Overall, not too bad!

Pros: beautifully landscaped grounds, nice pools, and buffet dinner was actually quite good.
Contras: room itself was nothing special, but bigger problem was the air conditioner didn't work and the room temp was pretty unpleasant for sleeping.
Lugar: kind of remote and not much in the area, but is a self contained place with a beach, pools, and activities...

Pros: Trees, nature, Restaurant, spacious room. Felt very secure, which is very important. this could be a really nice place for tourist
Contras: DIRECTIONS!!!! the map in expedia showed a completely different location.
Lugar: restaurant inside is great, the beaches and pools. All inside, but that makes it safe for tourist
Stayed one night only, the area was beautiful. Plenty of pools and access to the beach. Very natural, trees and birds. Very relaxing. The best was the restaurant, their staff was the best I have seen and the food was well prepared and tasty. It is secluded and a little difficult to find. I got lost a few times, but the people in San Jose were nice to give directions. The room was very very spacious and had extra beds for kids (or in-laws). Some apartments had small pools in their back yards.

Lugar: Nothing really nearby. The town we drive through seemed very run down.
Puerto San Jose is difficult to get to I'd you don't have a rental car and don't want to take a chicken bus. My friend and I had to take taxis both ways which was quite expensive. The hotel and location are beautiful but there is not much to do outside the resort. Or at the resort other than lay by the beach or pool. The staff was friendly enough but did not speak English which was not unusual. What was unusual was that they didn't seem to speak or understand Spanish very well. Service at the restaurant was incredibly slow but the food was good and decently priced by US standards. Overall we had a nice time. The massages at the spa on the beach were amazing! The black sand beach wa a lot of fun to play at and had a lifeguard there most of the time which was nice. It seemed like they were doing a lot of renovations so I'm sure in a few months the hotel will be even nicer. I would recommend it for those who rent a car and are only spending a couple days at the beach. The resort doesn't have enough to do to last a whole week.

Lugar: Located in a safe secured area about 2 hrs from Guatemala city. I suggest getting there before it gets dark.
If you are driving, get to this hotel before it gets dark. The roads in Guatemala do not have markers, so allow time for wrong turns etc. Also watch out for bikes, dogs, motorcycles and vehicles with no lights. The hotel is located about 1/4 mile from the ocean and has a black/brown sand beach. The water is clean but not blue. The breakfast was a buffet with plenty of choices.

Not only is the resort absolutely gorgeous, the staff is fantastic for family and singletons, the food and drinks are amazing. Everything is clean from the resorts grounds, dinnerware, rooms, etc. Beds are comfortable. We didn't leave the resort because there was no need to, but if you wanted to, it's recommended to only go into town in groups and during the day. It's a little sketchy at night. The resort has security and they do a great job. There was not one moment where we felt unsafe. While we were at the resort, we were planning for our next trip back. We can't wait to go back!
