A beautiful property in a lovely location.
If you want guaranteed sun and easy access to the beach go to the south coast. If you want a beautiful house in a lovely location then choose Los Bermejales. The house and the gardens are really attractive and (when the weather allows) there are lovely views across the valley to the peak opposite. We had a really warm welcome from the owner who had provided a huge basket of oranges grown in the valley below the house, vases of flowers and fruit, fresh bread and sausage. We greatly enjoyed exploring the little town of Firgas, which is a couple of miles down the road, there are plenty of bars for lunches and coffee (we didn’t try eating out in the evening), a small supermarket, and it is very pleasant to wander around. The house is well placed for exploring the island – easy to get to the north coast, up into the hills and to Las Palmas. The drive to the resorts of the South coast took about 1 – 1½ hours, if you went on the motorway, it was longer, but much more scenic, via the west coast road. There are also signposted footpaths running close by which would enable you to walk down to Firgas or up to the peak that you see across the valley. The weather during our stay was mixed. When the sun shone it was beautiful but a cap of cloud frequently covered the central mountains and extended to give us grey skies and rain. I don’t know how frequent a feature this is, but the vegetation in the area is lush and gorgeous and - of course – you can’t have this without rain. However, by driving down to the North Coast (half an hour away) we could be back in the sunshine. A few small niggles: • The stairs up to the bedroom are very steep. Anyone with restricted mobility might find them difficult. • The bed was hard. We like a firm bed but this was at the extreme end of firm. And the sheet was too narrow for the bed – impossible to tuck in on both sides. • Nervous drivers might find the parking (on a very steep slope) and the exit onto the road a bit of a challenge. Not for the fainthearted, although we never had any problems. • The cushions on the chairs in the living room seemed to have a life of their own and kept slipping through the frames. Which means that sitting and reading in the evening (there is no DVD player or English TV) can be a bit uncomfortable. However these should not put people off - we had a really great holiday
